A prolific writer, she produced a large number of articles and books on her occult ideas and also authored seven novels, several of which expound occult themes. Fortune was born in LlandudnoCaernarfonshireNorth Wales, to a wealthy upper middle-class English family, although little is known of her early life. By her teenage years she was living in England's West Countrywhere she wrote two books of poetry.
After time spent at a horticultural college she began studying psychology and psychoanalysis at the University of London before working as a counsellor in a psychotherapy clinic. She became interested in esotericism through the teachings of the Theosophical Societybefore joining an occult lodge led by Theodore Moriarty and then the Alpha et Omega occult organisation.
She came to believe that she was being contacted by the Ascended Masters, including " the Master Jesus ", and underwent trance mediumship to channel the Masters' messages.
In Fortune and Charles Loveday claimed that during one of these ceremonies they were contacted by Masters who provided them with a text, The Cosmic Doctrine. Although she became the president of the Christian Mystic Lodge of the Theosophical Society, she believed the society to be uninterested in Christianity, and split from it to form the Community of the Inner Light, a group later renamed the Fraternity of the Inner Light.
With Loveday she established bases in both Glastonbury and BayswaterLondon, began issuing a magazine, gave public lectures, and promoted the growth of their society.

She began planning for what she believed was a coming post-war Age of Aquariusalthough she died of leukemia shortly after the war's end. Fortune is recognised as one of the most significant occultists and ceremonial magicians of the early 20th century. The Fraternity she founded survived her and in later decades spawned a variety of related groups based upon her teachings.
Her novels in particular proved an influence on later occult and modern Pagan groups such as Wicca. One of John's sons — and Fortune's uncle — was the historian Charles Harding Firthwhile her father, Arthur, had run a Sheffield law firm prior to establishing a hydropathic establishment in Limpley StokeWiltshire. Little is known about Fortune's time in Wales, in part because throughout her life she was deliberately elusive when providing biographical details about herself.
After John Firth's death, Arthur moved with his family to London. Her proficiency with poultry led her to become a staff member at the college from January to April To recover from her experience at Studley, Fortune began studying psychotherapy.
Her first magical mentor was the Irish occultist and Freemason Theodore Moriarty. Moriarty performed an exorcismclaiming that the young man was the victim of the soul of a deceased East European soldier which had latched onto him as a parasite. Taverner, who appeared in a number of short stories first published inlater assembled in a collected volume as The Secrets of Dr. Taverner in Taverner was portrayed as carrying out exorcisms to protect humans from the attacks of etheric vampires.

Along with an anonymous woman known only as "E. It was in this manner that Fortune and Loveday claimed that they received a text, The Cosmic Doctrinewhich was dictated to them in segments by the Masters between July and February In August Moriarty died, and Fortune—who had never been particularly popular among his followers —tried to convince them that she should be their new leader.
A few accepted her offer, but many others instead accepted the leadership of Stafford-Allen. On 20 AugustFortune, Loveday, and others established themselves as a formal occult group. They later came to believe that this experience was a result of a messenger from the Elemental Kingdoms, and it greatly influenced their developing beliefs. An author and poet, she also published five books dealing with Wicca and related esoteric subjects. Born to a middle-class family in SurreyValiente began practicing magic while a teenager.
Working as a translator at Bletchley Park during the Second World Warshe also married twice in this period. Developing her interest in occultism after the war, she began practicing ceremonial magic with a friend while living in Bournemouth.
Learning of Wicca, in she was initiated into the Gardnerian tradition by its founder, Gerald Gardner. Soon becoming the High Priestess of Gardner's Bricket Wood covenshe helped him to produce or adapt many important scriptural texts for Wicca, such as The Witches Rune and the Charge of the Goddesswhich were incorporated into the early Gardnerian Book of Shadows. Ina schism resulted in Valiente and her followers leaving Gardner in order to form their own short-lived coven.
She went on the following year to work with Robert Cochrane in his coven, the Clan of Tubal Cainalthough she later broke from this group. Eager to promote and defend her religion, she played a leading role in both the Witchcraft Research Association and then the Pagan Front during the s and s. That latter decade also saw her briefly involve herself in far right politics as well as becoming a keen ley hunter and proponent of Earth mysteries.
As well as regularly writing articles on esoteric topics for various magazines, from the s onward she authored a number of books on the subject of Wicca, as well as contributing to the publication of works by Wiccan friends Stewart FarrarJanet Farrarand Evan John Jones. In these works also she became an early advocate of the idea that anyone could practice Wicca without requiring initiation by a pre-existing Wiccan, while also contributing to and encouraging research into the religion's early history.
Living in Brighton during these years, she was a member of the Silver Malkin coven and worked with Ron Cook, who was both her partner and initiate.
In her final years she served as patron of the Sussex-based Centre for Pagan Studies prior to her death from pancreatic cancer. Valiente's magical artefacts and papers were bequeathed to her last High Priest, John Belham-Paynewho donated them to a charitable trust, the Doreen Valiente Foundation, in Having had a significant influence in the history of Wiccashe is widely revered in the Wiccan community as "the Mother of Modern Witchcraft", and has been the subject of two biographies.
She despised the school and left it at the age of 15, refusing to return. Entering a relationship, they were married in East Glamorgan on 31 January After October she was transferred to the intelligence service's offices in Berkeley Street in the Mayfair area of London, where she was involved in message decryption.
Developing an interest in occultismshe began practicing ceremonial magic with a friend, "Zerki", at his flat. Valiente on her first meeting with Gardner, .
She had also become familiar with the idea of a pre-Christian witch-cult surviving into the modern period through the works of Charles Godfrey LelandMargaret Murrayand Robert Gravesalthough believed that the religion was extinct.
Discussing the recent opening of the Folklore Centre of Superstition and Witchcraft in Castletown on the Isle of Manit mentioned the museum's director, Cecil Williamsonand its "resident witch", Gerald Gardner. Intrigued by the article, Valiente wrote a letter to Williamson inwho in turn put her in contact with Gardner. Gardner invited Valiente again to Woodford-Grimes's house on Midsummerand it was here that he initiated her into Wicca in a ritual during which they stood before an altar and he read from his Book of Shadows.
Gardner had lent a ritual sword which he owned to the Druids, who placed it within the monument's Heel Stone during their rite. Valiente told her husband and mother about the visit to Stonehenge, but not about her initiation, of which, she feared, they would not have approved.Plattsburgh admission requirements gpa
Later in the year, Gardner invited Valiente to visit him at his flat in Shepherd's BushWest London, and it was there that she met the eight to ten members of his Bricket Wood covenwhich met near St. Albansnorth of London. She confronted Gardner with this; he claimed that the text he had received from the New Forest coven had been fragmentary, and he had had to fill much of it using various sources. She took the Book of Shadows, and with Gardner's permission, rewrote much of it, cutting out a lot of sections that had come from Crowley, fearing that his infamous reputation would sully Wicca.
Gardner spent his summers at the Museum of Magic and Witchcraft on the Isle of Man, and thus often relied on Valiente to deal with his affairs in Southern England. Spare subsequently described Valiente as "a myopic stalky nymph However Gardner's increasing desire for publicity, much of it ending up negative, caused conflict with Valiente and other members of his coven like Ned Grove and Derek Boothby.
She felt that in repeatedly communicating with the press, he was compromising the coven's security. Bracelin and his girlfriend 'Dayonis', stating that "a more qualid pair of spivs it would be hard to find indeed". From his home in the Isle of Man, he responded that this was not necessary for a series of rules already existed—at which point he produced the Wiccan Laws.
These laws limited the control of the High Priestess, which angered Valiente, who later realised that Gardner had simply made them up in response to her own Proposed Laws. Gerald; but we still believed that the real traditional witchcraft lived".
